Proper Mattress Support

Supporting your mattress correctly

Follow these rules to help your mattress feel great and last as long as possible.

What can I place my mattress on for proper support?

Any of the following can be used to properly support a mattress:

  1. A flat and firm, relatively new boxspring/foundation (can be called either name). The surface of the foundation should be completely flat across with no “bowing” in the middle. If the box/foundation is more than 8 years old, it should be replaced. Box/Foundations are available with any mattress purchase (or by themselves) at our store.
  2. A platform style bed frame with a roll-out slat system. The gap or space in between each slat should be no more than 3″. If the gap in between each slat is wider than 3″, more slats should be added or a box/foundation should to be used.
  3. A solid platform surface. The surface should be sturdy and completely flat, free from impressions. Keep in mind that the entire mattress must be supported evenly from edge to edge.
  4. Adjustable bed. All mattresses we currently offer are designed to work well with adjustable beds.

Bed Frame – Center Support

  • All Full and Queen size mattresses and foundations (width between 53” and 60″):
    • Must be supported by a frame that has at least one (1) leg extending to the floor near the center of the bed. This includes metal and wood style frames. Most modern bed frames will have the center legs pre-installed, but not all. Some older style frames may not have center legs installed. If yours does not have this already installed, they can be added using a piece of wood that extends from a center slat down to the floor.  Check with us at the store and we can point you in the right direction.
  • All King and California King size mattresses and foundations (width greater than 60″):
    • Must be supported by a frame that has at least two (2) legs extending to the floor near the center of the bed. This includes metal and wood style frames.

Center support for the sizes listed above is extremely important. Bed frames that lack center support can cause the mattress to “bow” towards the middle. This causes premature sagging and makes the mattress feel much softer than intended. Lack of proper center support will also void any mattress and foundation warranty. To receive full benefit of your new mattress, please be sure to check your frame and make sure it includes these items.
