Key Factors When Choosing A Mattress
Not sure which size is right for you? Consider these factors.
Who Will Sleep In Bed
Is the bed for one person or two? Will kids or pets be joining you?
Couples often prefer queen, king, or California king sizes for more space and less sleep disruption.
Solo sleepers might be comfortable in a twin, full, or queen, depending on their personal space needs.
Room Size
Measure your bedroom before upgrading. You’ll want to leave at least 24–36 inches of walking space around the bed.
A king-size bed might not be practical in a small room, while a twin or full can help maximize space in tighter areas.
Body Size
Taller individuals may find a twin XL or California king more comfortable due to the extra length.
If you’re a broader sleeper or tend to move around at night, a wider bed like a queen or king can help avoid feeling cramped.
Sleep Position
Do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? Side sleepers often sprawl out more and may appreciate the added width of a larger bed.
Back or stomach sleepers may be comfortable with less width, especially if sleeping solo.
Budget
Larger mattresses generally come with higher price tags, not just for the mattress, but for accessories like bed frames, sheets, and mattress protectors.
Make sure to budget for the full setup, not just the mattress itself.
Materials
Some materials, such as memory foam or latex, can feel different depending on the size of the mattress. For example, larger foam mattresses may need reinforced edges to maintain support.
Consider your preferences for firmness, temperature regulation, and motion isolation when choosing both size and material.
FAQs
Three-quarter, Olympic Queen, and waterbeds fall into this category.
