Mattress Size Chart
Mattress Size Chart: Standard, Custom & RV Sizes
Standard U.S. mattress sizes range from Twin (38″ × 75″) to California King (72″ × 84″), with Queen (60″ × 80″) being the most popular choice for couples. This guide covers every standard dimension, plus RV, camper, antique, waterbed, and European sizes. Need a non-standard size? Tampa Mattress Makers handcrafts custom mattresses to your exact specifications at our Clearwater, Florida workshop.

|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" | 75" |
| Twin XL | 38" | 80" |

| California King | 72" | 84" |
Twin Size Mattress
A twin mattress measures 38 inches wide by 75 inches long—the smallest standard adult mattress size in the U.S. It fits bedrooms as small as 7′ × 10′ while leaving room for a nightstand and dresser. Twin mattresses work best for children, single adults under 6′, bunk beds, trundles, and daybeds. This size is also popular for RVs, campers, and guest rooms where floor space is limited.
Dimensions: 38″ x 75″
Best for: Children, single sleepers, bunk beds
Room size: At least 7′ x 10′
Twin XL Mattress
A Twin XL mattress measures 38 inches wide by 80 inches long—5 inches longer than a standard twin. This extra length accommodates taller teens and adults up to 6’6″ without upgrading to a wider (and more expensive) mattress. Twin XL is the standard size for college dorm rooms and works well for growing teenagers, tall single sleepers, and adjustable bed frames. Two Twin XL mattresses placed side by side equal a standard king, making this a popular choice for split-king setups.
Dimensions: 38″ x 80″
Best for: Taller individuals, college dorms
Room size: At least 8′ x 10′
Full Size Mattress
A full mattress (also called a double) measures 53 inches wide by 75 inches long—15 inches wider than a twin but the same length. This mid-size option suits single adults who want extra sleeping space without taking up the room a queen requires. Full mattresses fit bedrooms as small as 10′ × 10′ and work well for guest rooms, studio apartments, and teenagers transitioning from a twin. While some couples use a full, each person only gets 26.5 inches of width—less than a twin provides for one sleeper.
Dimensions: 53″ x 75″
Best for: Solo sleepers who want more room
Room size: At least 10′ x 10′
Queen Size Mattress
A queen mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, making it the most popular mattress size in the United States. It gives couples 30 inches of personal space each while fitting comfortably in bedrooms as small as 10′ × 10′. Queen is the go-to choice for master bedrooms, guest rooms, and single sleepers who prefer extra room to spread out. This size also fits most standard bed frames, headboards, and sheet sets, making accessories easy to find.
Dimensions: 60″ x 80″
Best for: Couples, guest rooms
Room size: At least 10′ x 10′
King Size Mattress
A king mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long—the widest standard mattress size available. It gives couples 38 inches of personal space each, equivalent to a twin mattress per person. King size is ideal for couples who want room to spread out, families with children or pets who share the bed, and anyone who simply prefers a spacious sleep surface. This size requires a bedroom of at least 12′ × 12′ to allow for nightstands and walking space. A king mattress equals two Twin XL mattresses side by side, making it compatible with split-king adjustable bed setups.
Dimensions: 76″ x 80″
Best for: Couples who want extra space
Room size: At least 12′ x 12′
California King Mattress
A California King mattress measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long—4 inches narrower than a standard king but 4 inches longer. This makes it the best choice for taller sleepers, particularly those over 6’2″ who need extra legroom. Cal King works well in master bedrooms that are longer than they are wide, and it’s a popular choice in California and the West Coast where this size originated. Keep in mind that Cal King requires specific sheets and bed frames—standard king bedding won’t fit properly.
Dimensions: 72″ x 84″
Best for: Tall sleepers, couples
Room size: At least 12′ x 12′
RV Mattress Sizes
Rated Best RV Mattress 2026 by Sleep Foundation
RV mattresses use different dimensions than standard home mattresses. Most are shorter or narrower to fit the compact sleeping areas in motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and camper vans. The three most common RV sizes are listed below, but many RVs have mattresses with cut corners, curved edges, or completely custom shapes to fit around wheel wells and cabinetry.
- RV Twin: 28″ × 75″ or 34″ × 75″
- RV Full: 53″ × 75″
- Bunk sizes: 28″ × 72″, 30″ × 75″, 30″ × 80″, 34″ × 75″
- Truck sleeper cab: 35″ × 79″, 38″ × 80″, 42″ × 80″
| Size | Width | Length |
|---|---|---|
| RV Short Queen | 60" | 75" |
| RV Short King | 72" | 75" |
| RV King | 72" | 80" |
RV Mattresses with Cut Corners or Custom Shapes
Many RV sleeping areas aren’t rectangular. Mattresses may need angled corners to fit around wheel wells, curved edges to match the vehicle’s walls, or notched sections for steps and cabinets. Tampa Mattress Makers builds custom-shaped RV mattresses to your exact measurements. Bring us a template of your sleeping area (cardboard or paper works fine) and we’ll handcraft a mattress that fits perfectly.
Why Stock RV Mattresses Fall Short
The mattresses that come standard in most RVs are thin, low-density foam designed to keep the vehicle’s weight down—not to provide quality sleep. After a few nights on the road, most RV owners notice the difference. Upgrading to a handcrafted mattress with proper coil support and high-density foam transforms your RV bedroom into something that feels like home.
Tampa Mattress Makers builds RV mattresses in all firmness levels using the same American-made materials and tempered-steel coil systems as our standard home mattresses. Every RV mattress includes our 100-Night Comfort Adjustment guarantee.
Custom & Special Mattress Size Chart

Antique & Vintage Bed Frames
Beds made before the 1950s rarely match modern mattress dimensions. A “double” from 1920 might measure 48″ × 72″ instead of today’s 53″ × 75″. Rather than replacing a beautiful antique frame, bring us the interior measurements and we’ll build a mattress to fit. We work with carved Victorian frames, brass beds, Jenny Lind spindle beds, and sleigh beds regularly.
Waterbed Frame Conversions
If you have an old waterbed frame and want to switch to a traditional mattress, waterbed dimensions differ from standard sizes. The cavity inside most waterbed frames measures 2–6 inches smaller than standard mattresses. Tampa Mattress Makers can build a mattress to fit your existing waterbed frame exactly—no need to buy new furniture.
Split Mattresses for Adjustable Bases
Split queen and split Cal King mattresses work with adjustable bed frames that allow each side to move independently. Each half of the mattress raises and lowers separately, so one partner can sit up and read while the other lies flat. We build split mattresses in any firmness combination—firm on one side and plush on the other, for example.
Don’t See Your Size?
We build fully custom mattresses to any dimensions. Boat berths, truck sleeper cabs, odd-shaped alcoves, daybeds, corner beds—if you can measure it, we can build it. Contact us with your measurements or visit our Palm Harbor or Venice showroom for a quote.
European Mattress Size Chart
European bed frames use different dimensions than American standards. If you've imported furniture from Europe, purchased an IKEA bed frame, or moved to the U.S. with your existing bedroom furniture, you'll likely need a custom-sized mattress. Standard U.S. mattresses won't fit properly—they're either too wide, too narrow, or the wrong length.
| Size | Width | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Small Single | 30" | 75" |
| Single (EU) | 35" | 78" |
| Single (UK) | 35" | 75" |
| Single XL | 35" | 82" |
| Small Double | 47" | 75" |
| Double (EU) | 55" | 78" |
| Double (UK) | 53" | 75" |
| King (EU) | 63" | 79" |
| King (UK) | 59" | 78" |
| Grand / Super King | 71" | 79" |
Note: Due to a change in units of measure, inch dimensions may be slightly different from the exact EU size. Please double-check the frame dimensions to ensure a proper fit.
Why European and U.S. Sizes Don’t Match
European mattresses are measured in centimeters and follow a different sizing convention. A European “King” (160 cm wide) is actually smaller than a U.S. Queen (60″ / 152 cm). This causes confusion when shopping for replacement mattresses in the United States. Most American mattress retailers don’t stock European sizes, leaving you with few options.
IKEA Bed Frames
IKEA furniture sold in the U.S. now uses American mattress dimensions, but older IKEA beds or frames purchased in Europe use metric sizing. If your IKEA mattress feels slightly off or gaps appear between the mattress and frame, the bed may require European dimensions. Check the product label or measure the frame’s interior before ordering.
Custom European Sizes from Tampa Mattress Makers
Tampa Mattress Makers builds mattresses to any European specification. We’ll match your frame’s exact dimensions—whether it’s a German single, British double, or Scandinavian king. All European-size mattresses are handcrafted in Clearwater using the same American-made materials and construction as our standard lineup. Available in all firmness levels and every model from Seminole to Belleair.
How to Choose the Right Mattress Size
Not sure which size fits your needs? Consider these six factors before you buy.
Number of Sleepers
A bed for one person has different requirements than a bed for two. Couples typically need a queen (60″ wide) at minimum—this gives each person 30 inches of space. For more room, especially if kids or pets join you, a king (76″ wide) provides 38 inches per person. Solo sleepers can be comfortable on a twin, full, or queen depending on how much space they prefer.
Bedroom Dimensions
Measure your room before upgrading. Leave at least 24–36 inches of walking space on each side of the bed and at the foot. A king mattress needs a room of at least 12′ × 12′ to fit comfortably with nightstands. For rooms under 10′ × 10′, stick with a twin or full to avoid a cramped layout.
Quick reference:
- Twin/Twin XL: 7′ × 10′ minimum
- Full/Queen: 10′ × 10′ minimum
- King/Cal King: 12′ × 12′ minimum
Your Height
Standard twin, full, and queen mattresses are all 75″ long (just over 6 feet). If you’re taller than 6′, your feet may hang off the edge. Choose a Twin XL, queen, or California King—all 80″+ in length—for extra legroom. Cal King at 84″ long is the best option for sleepers over 6’4″.
Sleep Style
Side sleepers tend to sprawl and shift positions throughout the night, so a wider mattress (queen or king) prevents rolling off the edge. Back and stomach sleepers generally stay in one position and can sleep comfortably on narrower sizes like a twin or full.
Total Budget
Larger mattresses cost more—not just upfront, but for every accessory. King-size sheets, bed frames, mattress protectors, and headboards all carry premium pricing compared to queen or full sizes. Factor in the complete setup cost before deciding.
At Tampa Mattress Makers, our handcrafted mattresses start at $349 for a twin and scale up from there. Our 100-Night Comfort Adjustment lets you fine-tune the firmness after purchase at no extra charge—so you’re not locked into a decision.
Materials and Construction
Mattress materials perform differently at larger sizes. All-foam mattresses can sag at the edges without reinforced perimeters, especially in king and Cal King sizes. Tampa Mattress Makers addresses this with tempered-steel coil systems and reinforced steel perimeters in every model—from our entry-level Seminole to the premium Belleair. This ensures consistent support whether you’re buying a twin or a king.
For temperature regulation, our natural latex options in the Belleair line sleep cooler than memory foam, and all our foams are CertiPUR-US certified for low emissions.
