We have been building to measurement for long enough that the awkward sizes are the normal ones here. Short queen, RV king, bunk, three-quarter, and the shapes that have no name because they were cut to fit one rig.

The size on the chart is not always the size in your rig
Nearly every mattress site prints RV king as 72 by 80 inches. Several RV manufacturers ship something narrower. Grand Design lists the king option on the Solitude 417KB at 70 by 80. Keystone lists a 70 by 80 king option on the Cougar 355FBS. Brinkley builds the Model G with a 70 by 80 king carrying a 9 inch residential mattress.
Two inches sounds like nothing. It’s the difference between a mattress that drops in and one you have to shove past a wardrobe, which is how corners get crushed and edges fail in the first season.
Short queen has the same problem in the other direction. Some retailers sell it at 60 by 74, some at 60 by 75, and some manufacturers market 58 by 74 under the identical label. Measure the platform. Order to the measurement, not to the label.
What the current floor plans actually put in the bedroom
Fifth wheels have gone residential. Keystone’s Montana 3100RL lists a 60 by 80 full-size queen as standard rather than a short queen, with a king optional, and Keystone markets the current Montana on residential features including a king bed. Grand Design lists a 60 by 80 queen right across the Imagine, Imagine XLS, Reflection and Solitude lines, and offers a king on the Solitude and on five named Reflection floor plans. Alliance builds the Paradigm 375RD and 382RK around a king, with a queen option on both. Forest River puts an 80 inch residential-length mattress in the Limited Package on the Cherokee Alpha Wolf 22SW, which tells you what buyers have been asking for.
Class B and Class C went the other way. The Winnebago View and Navion 24D and 24T use a 60 by 75 Murphy+ queen. The 24R runs 32 by 76 twins that convert. The Ekko 22A uses the same 32 by 76 twins, and the Ekko Sprinter 23B stretches them to 32 by 80. Solis 59P and 59PX carry a 59 by 77 Murphy+ bed under a 52 by 79 pop-top.
Not one of those Winnebago numbers appears on a standard RV size chart. That’s the whole argument for a custom build.
Weight, and why cargo capacity decides it
Every towable has a cargo carrying capacity, the weight left over once you subtract what the trailer weighs empty from what it is rated to weigh loaded. Jayco publishes 1,055 pounds of CCC on the 2026 Jay Flight SLX 197MB, and that one number has to cover fresh water, propane, food, clothes, tools and the dog.
A foam RV build runs roughly 35 to 90 pounds depending on size and construction. A premium residential queen can hit 130 pounds and up, and dropping one of those into a small travel trailer spends close to a tenth of everything that trailer is legally allowed to carry, on the bed, before you load a single thing.

What makes a good RV mattress different
An RV mattress has to do three things a residential mattress doesn’t. It has to fit a non-standard platform, usually with a corner cut or an angled edge. It has to stay light. And it has to take vibration, temperature swings and Gulf Coast humidity for years on end without breaking down or taking a permanent body impression.
We build for that with closed-cell support foam that doesn’t take a set, breathable ticking that copes with Florida humidity, and edge construction that holds its shape when you sit up against the slide wall.
Corner cuts, radius corners and notches
Most RV beds need at least one corner taken back, usually at the foot, to clear a wardrobe, a slide wall or the cap on a fifth wheel. Three shapes cover nearly all of it.
An angled corner is one straight cut across the corner. A radius corner is a curve, common in Class B vans, Airstreams and boats. Those need a template, because we sculpt the interior materials and then sew the cover to match. A notched corner takes two cuts instead of one, turning a four-cornered mattress into a six-cornered one, which is what a stepped platform or a bed with posts needs.

Which of our builds goes into a rig
Three of our standard builds translate well into RV shapes. Coral is the entry model and the reason the price list starts at $249. Tarpon Firm is a hybrid with a classic firm feel and minimal cushion on top, which holds up where a mattress doubles as seating against a slide wall. Belleair is the latex hybrid, and natural latex is worth asking about for a rig that sits closed up in the Florida sun, because it breathes instead of holding heat.
Any of them can be cut to an RV size and shape. Every build is covered by the 100-Night Comfort Adjustment, so if the firmness is wrong once you’ve actually slept on it, we re-tune the padding at no charge for labor or materials.
Frequently asked questions
What size mattress fits my RV?
Whatever you measure. The common ones are RV short queen at 60 by 75 inches, RV short king at 72 by 75, and RV king at 72 by 80, but manufacturers vary and the label on the old mattress is a starting point, not a guarantee. Pull the old mattress out, measure the platform inside the bed frame in inches, note any angled or curved corners, and call us with the numbers.
Can I put a regular house mattress in an RV?
Sometimes, and it usually costs you something. A residential queen is 60 by 80, five inches longer than an RV short queen, so in most rigs it either doesn’t fit or it blocks a wardrobe or a walkway. Residential mattresses are also taller and heavier, which eats headroom under an overhead cabinet and eats cargo capacity. If your platform really is a true 60 by 80 with clearance to spare, a residential build is fine, and we make those too.
How thick should an RV mattress be?
Measure the clearance you have, then work down from it. The limits are usually the underside of an overhead cabinet, the top of a side rail, and whether a slide-out passes over the bed when it comes in. Our order form asks for a maximum thickness for exactly this reason. Give us that number and we build the comfort layer and support core to fit inside it.
How much does a custom RV mattress weigh?
Between 35 and 90 pounds depending on size and construction. Foam builds are lighter and hybrids with coils are heavier. If your rig is close to its cargo rating, tell us and we’ll spec for weight.
Will an RV mattress hold up to Florida humidity?
Yes. We build in Clearwater, so every mattress we make has already been made and stored in Florida humidity. Breathable ticking and quality foam stop the mold and mildew that ruins budget RV mattresses in a couple of seasons.
Can you deliver to an RV park?
We deliver across the Tampa Bay and Venice areas, RV parks included. For longer trips or out-of-area pickups, call the showroom and we’ll work it out. For anything outside Florida we route the order through Custom Mattress Makers, our online sister brand, which ships UPS to the lower 48.
