What Makes a Murphy Bed Mattress Different?
A Murphy bed mattress lives a different life than a regular mattress. It folds vertically into a cabinet every morning, sits compressed on its side for hours or days at a time, and has to drop back down without shifting, sagging, or fighting the frame.
Most off-the-shelf mattresses aren’t built for that. They’re too thick to clear the cabinet, too heavy for the lift pistons, and the materials inside aren’t designed to handle being stored on edge.

Standard Murphy bed sizes (Twin, Full, Queen) are just the starting point. We regularly cut down or up from those numbers when builders, DIY conversions, or older cabinets call for something non-standard.
How to Measure for a Custom Murphy Bed Mattress
Accurate measurements protect both your sleep and your hardware. Take them with the bed in the open (down) position.
- Measure the inside length of the mattress platform, head to foot.
- Measure the inside width of the platform, side to side.
- Check your hardware manual or the cabinet itself for a maximum mattress thickness, usually printed on the lift mechanism or in the installation guide.
- Confirm the maximum mattress weight your lift mechanism is rated for (most piston-style mechanisms list a range).
- Note the location and length of the retention strap so we can confirm it’ll reach across the new mattress.
If your cabinet has unusual hardware mounts or an angled headboard, a quick photo or sketch sent with your inquiry usually saves a phone call.

Our Seminole (6″), Coral (7″), and Tarpon Firm (6″) are our thinnest, lowest-profile builds, and the three we most often recommend for Murphy bed cabinets. The Tarpon Medium (9″) is a strong pick when your cabinet has a bit more clearance, and you want a more cushioned feel.
Any of our other models can also be built in custom Murphy sizing if your hardware is rated for the additional thickness and weight.
Most Murphy bed cabinets and mechanisms are designed for mattresses between 6″ and 12″ thick. Going thicker than your hardware allows usually means the cabinet won’t close cleanly, or the lift mechanism gets thrown out of balance. We always build to your stated ceiling thickness; if your manual says 10″, we won’t exceed 10″.
