Tampa Mattress Makers builds every mattress it sells in a Clearwater workshop about twelve miles from downtown St Petersburg, then sells it factory-direct with no distributor and no showroom chain in between. Beds start at $249. A local crew delivers across St Pete and the barrier islands, carries the mattress into the bedroom and can take the old one away on the same trip. Every coil build except the Coral carries a free 100-night comfort adjustment. The nearest mattress store to St Petersburg is our Palm Harbor showroom at 3460 Tampa Rd, about 25 miles north, and the drive is worth making once, because the comfort adjustment only covers a mattress you tried in the showroom before you bought it.

Built twelve miles up the road, not two states away

Almost every mattress sold in St Petersburg was made somewhere else. It comes off a line in another state, moves through a distributor, and lands on a retail floor with three margins already stacked on it. Ours are cut, filled and closed by hand in Clearwater, about twenty minutes up the road and closer to your bedroom than most of the chain warehouses that service this city.

That proximity is not sentiment. It decides what you can order. A mattress built on a production line arrives in the size the line was set up to make. A mattress built here can be 74 inches long because the alcove in your Old Northeast bungalow has a window sill in the way, or eight inches thick because that is all the clearance your Murphy cabinet leaves, or firmer on one side than the other because you and your partner have never agreed about it.

Two generations of one family run the workshop and the showroom, and roughly a thousand mattresses leave the building each year, made to order. The foams carry CertiPUR-US certification, the materials meet GREENGUARD Gold emission limits, and the timber in the foundations is FSC certified. The USA-made mattress page lists where the components come from.

Getting a mattress into a St Pete condo

This is the part that goes wrong, and it has nothing to do with the mattress. The tower at 400 Central topped out at 46 stories and opened in 2025 as the tallest building in the city. Saltaire, Art House and The Nolen went up in the same handful of years. Downtown is a vertical neighborhood now, and vertical neighborhoods have rules.

Most towers make you book the service elevator in a block, some as short as two hours. Many want a certificate of insurance from whoever is doing the carrying, naming the association. Weekday windows are common, weekends less so, and a loading dock you have not reserved is a loading dock you cannot use. None of that is unreasonable. It does mean the delivery has to be planned, not guessed at.

So tell us the building when you order. We will work to its window, bring the paperwork it asks for, and send a crew that has been through a residential tower before.

And if the service elevator is a problem, there is a second route in. The workshop runs a roll-packing machine that compresses a mattress into a sealed bag about the size of a duffel, free on every model except the Coral. Most of our beds are built on tempered steel coils, which an ordinary packing machine will not touch, so ours runs two high-strength hydraulic presses and four chain-driven motors. We have packed close to 2,000 of them. Collect one that way and a king rides up in the passenger elevator with you, then takes its shape in the bedroom. Ask when you order whether roll-packing can be arranged for your building.

That solves the eighth-floor walk-up, the tight turn at the top of a Snell Isle staircase, and the building that only releases the freight elevator on a Tuesday morning. Full terms are on the delivery and pickup page.

Small rooms, second bedrooms and beds that fold away

Downtown square footage is expensive, which is why so many St Pete condos ask one room to do two jobs. The mattress is usually the piece nobody planned for.

A Murphy bed mattress has to be thin enough for the cabinet to close, light enough for the lift pistons, and comfortable enough that a guest forgets it folds up. Most mechanisms are engineered around six to twelve inches. We build to whatever number is printed on your hardware, in soft, medium or firm.

Built to the thickness printed on the lift hardware, not trimmed down from a standard mattress.

A split king is two extra-long twins side by side, which is what makes an adjustable base work for two people who disagree about elevation. It is also the easiest king to get through a doorway, because it arrives as two halves. Daybeds, trundles and bunk mattresses for a rental unit are all routine work, and the mattress size chart has exact dimensions if you are measuring a room.

Anything genuinely odd goes through the custom sizes page. Send measurements, or trace the shape onto cardboard and photograph it. We have built for platform beds with built-in nightstands, for antique frames whose side rails predate anyone standardizing anything, and for a lot of boats.

Four collections, one workshop

  • Coral, from $249. The entry build, and the reason the price list starts where it does. It ends up in guest rooms, rentals and bunks more than anywhere else. Collection only, and the one model outside the roll-packing and comfort-adjustment programs.
  • Silver, from $399. Tempered-steel innerspring support with better comfort layers. The everyday choice.
  • Gold, from $799. Gel-cooling comfort layers over a reinforced coil core.
  • Black, from $1,449. The flagship, built to hold its feel for years, not seasons.

Adjustable bases start at $899 and boxsprings at $180, with metal bed frames from $69.99. If you are not sure which tier you want, how to choose a mattress is a better starting point than a comparison chart.

A bed that sits empty from May to November

Plenty of St Pete bedrooms are only slept in for part of the year. The condo on Bayway Isles or the place off Beach Drive gets six months of use, then a closed door, a thermostat set high, and Gulf coast humidity doing as it likes.

That changes what you should buy. Natural latex has an open cell structure that moves air instead of trapping it. Gel memory foam pulls heat away instead of reflecting it back. A tempered steel coil core leaves room for air to travel through the middle of the bed, which a solid foam slab cannot do. A mattress that sleeps fine in Michigan in February can sleep clammy here in March.

Two practical things help when you close the place up. Leave the bed uncovered instead of sealing it under plastic, and use a breathable mattress protector, not a vinyl one.

The seasonal calendar has a useful quirk too. The comfort adjustment window opens after the fourteenth night and runs to night 100, which fits inside a single season. Take delivery in November and you have until roughly late February to decide the firmness is wrong and have it changed. Leave it until you are back north and the window has closed behind you. If you split the year between here and somewhere else, we ship roll-packed mattresses by UPS, every model except the Coral, anywhere in the 48 contiguous states, which is how a fair few customers end up with the same bed in both houses.

What happens to the old mattress

Old mattress and boxspring disposal is available with the delivery, booked at the same time, which for most people is the end of it. The alternative is worth knowing about.

The City of St Petersburg runs a special pickup service on 727-893-7398 or through SeeClickFix. Furniture, carpet and appliances are collected free up to three cubic yards, which normally covers a mattress and boxspring, and anything past that is $25.65 per cubic yard. The catch is placement: it has to be booked, and the item has to go where your trash is normally collected, at the curb or in the alley. In a tower with a trash room and a private hauler there is no curb to use, and the old mattress sits in a hallway or a parking bay until somebody deals with it. If you are still deciding whether the old one has had it, the signs are fairly clear.

Berths for a city that is half water

St Petersburg holds 61.9 square miles of land and 73.6 square miles of water inside the city limits, and the Municipal Marina downtown alone has 640 permanent wet slips, thirteen moorings and 500 feet of transient dock.

Very few of those boats have a rectangular bed. A V-berth narrows to a point, a mid-cabin slides under the cockpit sole with twenty inches of headroom, an aft cabin rounds off at a corner to clear a bulkhead. Factory berth cushions are typically four inches of the cheapest foam that will hold a shape: fine for a weekend, grim for a week aboard. Bring measurements or a cardboard template and we build to the shape, in the same materials as the bedroom range, with radius corners, tapers, notches and hinged splits for a berth that has to fold through a companionway. The same workshop builds the RV and camper mattresses we are better known for, and the RV mattress guide covers the sizing traps if you tow instead of dock.

Delivery across St Petersburg and the beaches

A local crew handles delivery and setup. The mattress, foundation and frame are carried in and put together in the bedroom, the packaging leaves on the truck, and the old bed can go with it if you book that too.

We cover downtown and the Edge District, Old Northeast and Historic Kenwood, Snell Isle, Shore Acres and Venetian Isles, Crescent Lake and Euclid St Paul, Jungle Terrace and the Tyrone corridor, Broadwater, Pinellas Point and Bayway Isles in the south, and over the causeways to St Pete Beach, Pass-a-Grille, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach and Tierra Verde. Gulfport, Pinellas Park, Seminole and Kenneth City sit on the same run. Call the showroom on (727) 772-9023 for current pricing to your zip code. Prefer to collect it yourself and skip the fee? Roll-packing is free on everything except the Coral models, and it fits in a back seat.

A hundred nights to get the firmness right

Give a new bed two weeks before you judge it. Most bodies need that long to stop noticing the change. From the fifteenth night through to night 100, the 100-night comfort adjustment lets us open the mattress and rework the padding in the comfort layer until the firmness is right. We charge nothing for the labor or the materials.

Two conditions, stated plainly because they matter more from St Petersburg than from Palm Harbor. The mattress has to have been tried in the showroom before you bought it, and it has to get to the Clearwater factory and back, which is on you. Plenty of customers hire a local mover for that leg. It is not a sleep trial and it is not a return, because used mattresses cannot be returned. It is a rebuild of the bed you already own.

Driving up from St Petersburg

Every route below ends the same way: Tampa Rd heading east, plaza on your left about three-quarters of a mile past US 19. Book an appointment first on (727) 772-9023 and the showroom is yours for the hour instead of shared with four other couples.

From downtown and the Old Northeast it is about 25 miles and forty minutes. I-275 north to the Roosevelt Boulevard exit, west to US 19, then north to Tampa Rd. Going straight up 4th Street and then US 19 covers a similar distance on surface roads.

From Shore Acres and Venetian Isles, 22 miles, and the quickest way out of the neighborhood is Gandy to I-275 instead of doubling back through downtown.

From the Tyrone corridor and Jungle Terrace it is the short one, about 20 miles and thirty-five minutes, straight up Seminole Boulevard or US 19 depending on traffic.

From Gulfport, 24 miles, picking up US 19 at Park Boulevard. Historic Kenwood is a little shorter still, and easier than it sounds: 34th Street North is US 19, so turn north and stay on it.

From St Pete Beach and Treasure Island, 25 miles and about three-quarters of an hour, because Gulf Boulevard and the causeway decide the timing more than the distance does. From Tierra Verde and Pass-a-Grille, add another six or seven miles on top of that.

Shopping from further south? The Venice showroom carries the same lineup, and all our locations sit on one page. The lot in Palm Harbor is open parking right in front of the units, so you will not circle for a space.

St Petersburg mattress store FAQs

Do you have a mattress store in St Petersburg?

Not a retail floor in the city. The workshop that builds your mattress is in Clearwater, about twelve miles from downtown St Pete, and the showroom is at 3460 Tampa Rd in Palm Harbor, about 25 miles north. Visits are by appointment, Monday to Saturday, on (727) 772-9023. Many St Petersburg customers order by phone and take delivery, though the 100-night comfort adjustment only covers a mattress tried in the showroom first, so the drive is worth making once.

Do you deliver mattresses to St Petersburg and the beaches?

Yes. Downtown, the Old Northeast, Snell Isle, Shore Acres, Historic Kenwood, Jungle Terrace, Pinellas Point, Bayway Isles, and over the causeways to St Pete Beach, Pass-a-Grille, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach and Tierra Verde, plus Gulfport, Seminole, Kenneth City and Pinellas Park. The crew carries it in, sets it up in the bedroom and takes the packaging away. Call the showroom for pricing to your zip code.

Can you get a mattress into a downtown condo?

Yes, and it is easier than most people expect. Tell us the building when you order and we will work to its service elevator window and bring whatever paperwork the association asks for. If the freight elevator is a problem, ask about roll-packing: the mattress is compressed into a sealed bag about the size of a duffel that rides up in a passenger elevator and takes its shape once it is in the room. Roll-packing is free on every model except the Coral.

Will you take away my old mattress?

Yes, if you book disposal with the delivery. The old mattress and boxspring then leave on the truck along with the plastic and cardboard from the new one. The alternative is a special pickup through the City of St Petersburg on 727-893-7398, free for furniture up to three cubic yards but left at the curb or in the alley, which is awkward in a building with a trash room and a private hauler.

How much do your mattresses cost?

From $249 for the Coral, $399 for Silver, $799 for Gold and $1,449 for the Black Collection. Adjustable bases start at $899, boxsprings at $180 and metal bed frames at $69.99. Building and selling it ourselves is what takes the retail margins out of those numbers.

I am only here for part of the year. Does that change anything?

Two things. The comfort adjustment window runs from night 15 to night 100, so a delivery in November leaves you until late February to decide the firmness is wrong and have it changed, which fits inside one season. It covers coil mattresses other than the Coral, needs the bed to have been tried in the showroom before purchase, and you cover the transport to the Clearwater factory and back. And if you keep a home in another state, we ship roll-packed mattresses, every model except the Coral, by UPS anywhere in the 48 contiguous states.

Start with the measurements

Call (727) 772-9023, or send your dimensions through the custom sizes page if what you need is not a standard size. If you would rather lie on a few first, book an hour at the Palm Harbor showroom. Shopping from across the bay instead? The Tampa and Clearwater pages cover those routes.

It hasn't been a month yet since I purchased the Westchase Medium Firm King mattress and box spring from Tampa Mattress Makers. However, I am so glad I chose them. From the very first time I walked into their store to the delivery, Bill and Jack have been fantastic to do business with. I am very fussy with mattresses and the one I chose is perfect for my husband and I. I highly recommend checking them out.

If I could give this business 10 stars I would. We had an excellent experience at Tampa Mattress. This is a local, family owned business. We were greeted by Bill when we walked in and he explained how the mattresses are constructed and we could see that they use high quality materials. He took his time with us and explained the differences between all of the mattresses and the bases. Their mattresses are customizable and their pricing is very competitive. Each mattress is made to order by family members in just a few days at their St. Pete facility. Delivery went very smoothly with Jack and his delivery partner. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to be home when the mattress and base were being delivered so my husband had them set the adjustable base a little too high for me. I called the store and Bill explained how to lower the base and even offered to come over when he left the shop that night or to have his son Jack come over on his day off. We were able to lower the base ourselves, but are very grateful for the superior Customer Service that was provided. I will never go anywhere else to get a mattress. I highly recommend this business to anyone looking for a new mattress.

Jack at the Venice store of Tampa Mattress offered probably the best customer service I have received in decades. His attention to detail, his enthusiasm and sincere desire to remedy my back pain issues, while adhering to my limited budget; every aspect of my highest hopes were achieved and surpassed. He even delivered it same day at no additional charge. I am certain that because this is a family owned and operated business, and that his father and sister were also a part of the team, is why I was treated with such respect. It did not go unnoticed. Bravo, Jack. Godspeed.❤️

We had a wonderful experience with Tampa Mattress Makers! Bill Lamirande was very personable & did a wonderful job in explaining how their mattresses are made all American materials with no products from China & each mattress is made to order. We did check out Mattress Firm after our time in Tampa Mattress Company & just walking into that store, you could smell the chemicals & the mattresses just felt cheap. They offer an exceptional warranty & the customer service spot on! Thanks Bill!

Our salesman was Bill. We had a fantastic experience with him in finding our perfect mattresses for our camper. The bunk beds had a custom size with an angle in the corner. He was able to match them perfectly. The comfort was a huge upgrade from the standard mattresses that come in a camper. It is just as comfortable as sleeping at home. We also purchased a custom queen for the main bedroom. We couldn’t recommend this place higher.
